Not that I know anything, but a wholesale switch from PowerPC to x86 seems unlikely to me. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part. Given the run-up on Apple’s stock following the WSJ story, someone is excited about the idea. But not me. If Apple moves the Mac to x86 I’ll be unhappy. I’m not terribly interested in buying new x86 versions of Mac software I already have. I’m not eager to see ‘fat’ binaries with PowerPC and x86 code.
Shifting from PowerPC to x86 would be a huge disruption to the Mac user base and developer community. Given recent news of Intel’s struggles, IBM’s advances with multi-core chips, and Microsoft’s XBox 360 preview such a shift would seem to make little sense.
So I’m guessing this is really about other devices or other chips or other technologies.
